Police in Whitewater, Wisconsin are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a student who was a college gymnastics national champion.
The body of 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student Kara Welsh was found with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment near the campus shortly before midnight on Friday. Investigators believe she was shot following an altercation with a 23-year-old man who was also in the apartment and was taken into custody. Police did not release the suspect’s identity and multiple charges are pending, including first-degree intentional homicide. A statement from the university said Welsh was a management major at the school’s College of Business and Economics. At the 2023 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Division Three National Championships, Welsh captured first place in the vault.
