A recent mattress event serves as a wake up call!
The local drop-off mattress recycling event on August 3rd diverted 260 local mattresses from the landfill. All mattresses collected at this event were transported to 7 Rivers Recycling in La Crosse, WI for environmentally-responsible reclamation and recycling of foam, fabrics, wood, and metal material.
Mattresses are large and don’t compact well, meaning that the average queen mattress occupies 27 cubic feet in the local landfill. The springs in standard mattresses also can damage landfill equipment, increasing landfill maintenance costs for the community. Mattress recycling dramatically reduces landfill utilization, making local landfills sustainable for longer periods of time.
The partnership between Kersten Family Junk Removal and 7 Rivers Recycling has resulted in 2,320 mattresses being diverted from the 7 Mile landfill since its inception in February of 2022. This amounts to a savings of over 60,000 cubic feet of landfill space.
