First LGBTQ Landmark Unveiled in WI

The first LGBTQ historical landmark in Wisconsin is in Milwaukee.

People gathered at the former site of the Black Nite Tavern yesterday to honor the landmark and Josie Carter. Carter was a Black transgender woman who defended the tavern during an uprising in 1961, after four men started a fight in the gay bar. The Wisconsin Historical Society says it’ll be one of almost 30 new markers telling the stories of underrepresented communities statewide.
