Republican lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are talking about more oversight for the state’s prisons.
State Senator Howard Marklein, who sits on the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, yesterday said he wants to see more leadership and more accountability from the Department of Corrections, and Governor Tony Evers. Wisconsin’s DOC secretary stepped-down in March, just a few months ahead of the arrest of nine people at the prison in Waupun, including the former warden. Marklein said lawmakers are considering legislation that would require legislative oversight.
Lawmakers are also talking about replacing the prisons in Waupun and Green Bay, but Governor Evers has opposed those plans in the past because he wants a ‘holistic’ solution.
