Marine researchers say they have discovered over 100 new species during an expedition off the coast of Chile.
During the Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition, researchers identified species including deep-sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, and squat lobsters. Researchers also used an underwater robot to map the seafloor and found four previously unknown underwater mountains. A researcher who led the quest says the amount of new species they found is “mind-blowing” and the expedition exceeded their hopes. The Schmidt Ocean Institute says a second expedition is launching this weekend.
