A proposal in the Wisconsin Legislature would add a black and white license plate option to the vanity plate list.
The plate, which would have a black background and white text, has been a popular option for motorists in Iowa and Minnesota. In Iowa, blackout plates have brought more than 30-million dollars in revenue since they became available in 2019. In Minnesota, the plates were introduced on January 1 and more than 16-hundred were sold in the first two days. The Wisconsin bill’s co-authors say the addition would be an extra source of revenue for the state’s road projects. They would cost 25-dollars more than standard plates, and an additional 25-per-year as a renewal fee.
