Shane Helmbrecht will wait until February to see if he will go to trial.
A judge last week ordered Helmbrecht’s latest competency hearing be pushed back. Helmbrecht was originally found unfit for trial in the 2016 death of his neighbor. He was sentenced to a state mental hospital, but then left a halfway house earlier this year and fled to Mexico. He’s back in Eau Claire, and prosecutors are considering filing charges once again.
