We like to take an easier approach to Saturday morning with your “scroll down memory lane.” It’s a simple look back at events that happened on this day before you head out to create new memories today.

Today is Saturday, December 16th, the 350th day of the year.

On this day:

In 1773, the Boston Tea Party took place in Boston, Massachusetts. In a raid on three British ships in Boston Harbor, American colonists, disguised as Native Americans, dumped more 300 chests of tea overboard. The incident was a protest of Britain’s taxation of tea in the colonies.

In 1835, fire swept through the city of New York, destroying more than 600 buildings and causing an estimated 20-million-dollars worth of damage.

In 1915, Albert Einstein published his “General Theory of Relativity.”

In 1944, during World War Two, German forces attacked United States troops in The Battle of the Bulge. The fighting claimed 77 thousand U.S. casualties and 130 thousand German casualties. The offensive was ruled a failure.

In 1980, Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders died at the age of 90.

In 1998, U.S. and British jet fighters began a four-night campaign of air attacks on more than 100 Iraqi military targets. The action came after the allies concluded Iraq would not cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors.

In 2005, character actor John Spencer died after suffering a heart attack. He was 58.

In 2010, the final episode of “Larry King Live” aired on CNN.

In 2011, home run king Barry Bonds was sentenced to two years probation, 30 days home confinement, and 250 of hours of community service for a perjury conviction related to his grand jury testimony regarding steroid use.

In 2015, the first trial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray ended in a mistrial on this day. Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on any of the charges against Officer William Porter. Porter was charged with involuntary manslaughter and other offenses in connection with Gray’s death in police custody.

In 2019, 25 years after it’s release, Mariah Carey’s single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” reached number one.

In 2020, a major winter storm blasted the Northeast, killing at least seven people. It also brought record breaking snowfall, including a massive 41-inches of snow to Binghamton, New York.

In 2020, Major League Baseball announces it is elevating Negro Leagues to Major League status.

In 2022, producers of Pokemon announced that the main characters Ash Ketchum and Pikachu would be leaving the anime series after 25 years. The series would continue on new adventures with new faces and characters.
