In 1792, “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” was published for the first time.
In 1940, the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker debuted in “Knock, Knock.”
In 1944, Baseball Hall-of-Famer Kenesaw Mountain Landis died at the age of 78. He was the first commissioner of baseball.
In 1949, tap dancing king Bill “Bojangles” Robinson died at the age of 71.
In 1963, the body of President John F. Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1980, Sugar Ray Leonard reclaimed the WBC welterweight title when Roberto Duran quit after eight rounds. Duran claimed he had stomach cramps.
In 1981, actor Jack Albertson died at the age of 74. He starred in a variety of projects including the television show “Chico and the Man” and the film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
In 1986, President Ronald Reagan announced the resignation of national security advisor John Poindexter and the firing of Poindexter’s aide Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North following the Iran-Contra arms sale.
In 1987, Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago, died at the age of 65.
In 1998, comedian Flip Wilson died at the age of 64.
In 1999, five year-old Elian Gonzalez was rescued off the coast of Florida by fishermen. Elian was one of three survivors of a boat carrying 14 Cuban refugees that had sunk days earlier. The boy’s rescue triggered a international custody battle between his relatives in Miami and his father in Cuba.
In 2001, scientists in Worcester, Massachusetts claimed to have created the first early human embryo clones, none of which survived.
In 2011, Black Friday shopping was marred by several reports of violence in various cities including that of a Southern California woman who reportedly pepper sprayed rival shoppers in her pursuit of an XBox video game console.
In 2016, Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro died at the age of 90. Castro was a Cuban revolutionary who served as prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and the country’s president until 2008.
In 2017, actress Naya Rivera was arrested on a domestic battery charge.
In 2017, Emma Wren Gibson was born. She was frozen as an embryo 24 years prior, making her the longest known frozen embryo to successfully be born.
In 2019, Louis Vuitton bought Tiffany & Co. for over 16-billion-dollars.
In 2020, President Donald Trump pardoned his former security advisor Michael Flynn, who had pleaded guilty to charges about lying to the FBI.
In 2022, Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter Irene Cara died at the age of 63. She was well-known for the movie and song “Fame” and the song “Flashdance.. What A Feeling.”
