Lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol want to make sure that you can grow a garden in your backyard.
An Assembly panel will hold a vote later today on a plan that would make it clear local governments cannot stop you from planting a garden on your own property. The proposal would prohibit a city, county, or township from requiring people to get a permit before they could plant tomatoes, strawberries, herbs or other vegetables. The plan would also make sure that you don’t need a permit to plant flowers in your yard. Local governments, however, would still be able to require people mow their lawns and/or regulate water and fertilizer use.
