In 1639, the first American log cabin was constructed at Fort Christina in Wilmington, Delaware.
In 1692, Bridget Bishop was the first victim of the Salem witch trials. She was hanged for witchcraft in the colony of Massachusetts.
In 1752, Benjamin Franklin took a kite out into a storm to see if the key attached to the string would draw an electrical charge.
In 1854, the first class graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
In 1915, The Girl Scouts of America was incorporated.
In 1924, the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, was broadcast on NBC Radio. It became the first political convention heard on radio.
In 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio.
In 1943, the ball point pen was invented.
In 1946, boxer Jack Johnson was killed in a car accident at the age of 68.
In 1963, The Equal Pay Act was enacted by then President John F. Kennedy.
In 1977, James Earl Ray escaped from a Tennessee prison while serving out his life sentence for the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was captured three days later.
In 1985, Coca Cola announces the return of its 99-year-old formula.
In 1998, former Oak Ridge Boys member Steve Sanders died from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound. He was 45.
In 2002, Mafia figure John Gotti died from complications of cancer. “The Dapper Don,” was as known for his connections to the Gambino crime family as for his movie star demeanor. Gotti died in prison while serving a life sentence on racketeering charges. He was 61.
In 2004, music legend Ray Charles died at his home in Los Angeles from complications of liver disease. He was 73.
In 2007, after six storied seasons, HBO’s hit mob drama “The Sopranos” came to an end.
In 2010, the Pacific-10 Conference announced that Big 12 Conference member the University of Colorado had accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10. It was the first move in the beginnings of the restructuring of U.S. College Sports teams.
In 2016, singer Christina Grimmie, who was a contestant on “The Voice,” was shot and killed following a concert in Orlando, Florida. The suspect opened fire on the singer when she was signing autographs, before turning the gun on himself.
In 2016, Ice hockey legend Gordie Howe died at the age of 88. “Mr. Hockey” is one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time, holding the NHL record for the most games and seasons played. He received the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
