In 1834, New York City voters elected Cornelius Lawrence as mayor of their city, making him the first mayor elected by popular vote.
In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
In 1941, Earle Graser died in an auto accident. He was the voice of the radio program “The Lone Ranger.”
In 1973, artist Pablo Picasso died at the age of 91.
In 1974, Hank Aaron belted his 715th career home run to move past Babe Ruth into first place on the all-time home run list.
In 1992, tennis great Arthur Ashe announced at a news conference that he had AIDS. Ashe died in February 1993 from complications related to the disease.
In 1994, smoking was banned at the Pentagon and on all military bases.
In 1994, the body of Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain was discovered at his home in Seattle, Washington. Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 27-years-old.
In 2006, the Rolling Stones made their China debut, performing a two-hour show in front of an eight-thousand strong crowd at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
In 2010, famed music manager Malcolm McLaren died at the age of 64. McLaren is best known for managing the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls.
In 2013, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died after suffering a stroke. She was 87.
In 2013, original Mickey Mouse Club member and “Beach Party” movie teen idol Annette Funicello died after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was 70.
In 2016, The influential rap group N.W.A. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cheap Trick, Steve Miller, Deep Purple and Chicago were also inducted.
In 2016, Trevor Story set a MLB record for a rookie by hitting home runs in each of his first four games. He was playing with the Colorado Rockies.
In 2019, a Burmese python broke the record for longest python at 17 feet. She was pregnant with 73 eggs when snake hunters found her in Florida.
In 2021, US President Joe Biden unveils package of executive actions on gun violence.
In 2022, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars for 10 years after he slapped host Chris Rock on stage during the 2022 ceremony.
