The Eau Claire Fire Department responded to a structure fire overnight in the 600 Block of 5th Avenue. Three engine companies, one truck company, one medic company, and two Chief officers responded.
Engine 2 arrived within minutes of the initial call to find a detached garage fully involved in fire with residential structures on both sides in close proximity. Both structures (a rooming house on one side and an apartment building on the other side) were immediately protected against fire exposure while the garage fire was contained.
Both residential structures, which were occupied at the time, were evacuated, with assistance from the Eau Claire Police Department, while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and assure no fire extended into the residences. Because of the quick fire attack, only minor damage occurred to the exterior of the exposed residences.
After the fire was brought under control, occupants were able to return.
