Voters Turned Out, Election Results Unfold

On the other side of an active Election Day, we take a look at the results going forward.

It will be a second term for Tony Evers.  He beat Republican Tim Michels, taking about 51-percent of the vote.  Wisconsin’s race was the most expensive governor’s race in the country.  Michels last night told his supporters that there are problems in Wisconsin that still need to be fixed.  Evers told supporters last night that ‘boring wins’ and shows appreciation to the state for voting against Republicans.

He’s the first Wisconsin governor in 30 years to win re-election while his party is in the White House.

Republican incumbent Ron Johnson is leading the race for the U.S. Senate.  Johnson went to bed early this morning with a lead over Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes last night.  Unofficial numbers gave Johnson just under 51-percent of the vote, compared to Barnes’ 49 percent.  Johnson said he’s going to wait until all of the votes are in, but he told supporters in Neenah last night that the ‘race is over.’  Johnson said his race shows that the truth can win over the lies.  Barnes’ campaign said they are not conceding until every vote is counted.

Robin Vos will continue as the most powerful Republican in the state.  Assembly Speaker Vos last night defeated a write-in challenge from Adam Steen.  Vos will start his 10th term in January.

There will be a few more Republicans in the state legislature next year but not enough to give them total control. Republicans needed five seats to grab a veto-proof majority, it looks like they won three. Republicans in the Senate split on some key races. Republicans will still have a majority at the Capitol, but will not be able to override any vetoes from Governor Tony Evers.

In races closer to us, Western Wisconsin will have a new Republican Congressman next year.

Derrick Van Orden won the race last night to replace Ron Kind in Congress.  Van Orden was expected to win big, but in the end came away with just a 12 thousand vote lead.  Van Orden narrowly lost against Kind two years ago.  Kind has been in Congress for western Wisconsin since 1997.
