The ACLU of Wisconsin says many jails in the state don’t make it easy for prisoners to vote.
The ACLU says just 60 people registered to vote from jail in 2020, and just 50 people actually voted from jail in that election. Wisconsin law allows people who are in jail to vote, it is convicted felons who are not allowed to vote in the state. The ACLU says most jails in Wisconsin either have vague voting policies, or no policies at all. Some sheriffs told the ACLU they leave it up to prisoners to ask for a ballot. The ACLU wants to change that, and have more of an outreach to people who are behind bars and can vote.
