Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican challenger Tim Michels traded barbs over issues including crime, education, and state spending in their only debate Friday night in Madison.
Both candidates repeatedly worked to paint their opponent as “too radical.” Michels said he would provide what he called “massive tax relief” and said he would spend more money on education than any governor in state history. Evers said the answer to both issues comes down to the state sharing revenue with counties and municipalities to pay for services, including a 12-percent increase in the next biennial budget.
Both Evers and Michels said they would certify the results of the next presidential election. A Marquette Law School poll earlier this month showed the race nearly deadlocked, with Evers holding a 47-percent to 46-percent lead over Michels among likely voters.
