It’s a quick look back onto the pages of history before we head out into a new day and record more events along the way. So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll…again!

Today is Saturday, September 24th, the 267th day of the year.  There are 98 days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1904, 102 people are injured and 62 people die in a train collision in Tennessee.

In 1906, Devil’s Tower in northeastern Wyoming, was established as a national monument.

In 1934, Babe Ruth made his farewell appearance as a regular player for the New York Yankees.

In 1957, President Eisenhower sent federal troops into Little Rock, Arkansas, to protect nine black students entering the newly integrated school for the first time.

In 1960, the U.S.S. Enterprise was launched at Newport News, Virginia.  It was the U.S. Navy’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

In 1961, “The Bullwinkle Show” appeared on NBC.  It marked the first time Rocky and Bullwinkle were seen on prime time television.

In 1968, “60 Minutes” debuted on CBS.  Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner were the show’s two correspondents.

In 1969, the “Chicago Eight” went on trial for the events at the 1968 Democratic Party National Convention. They were charged with  with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot.

In 1976, newspaper heiress Patty Hearst was sentenced to seven years in prison for her role in a 1974 bank robbery.  She was released 22 months later under an executive order of clemency order from President Jimmy Carter.

In 1988, singer James Brown was arrested after leading authorities on a two-state high-speed chase through Georgia and South Carolina.

In 1991, children’s book author Theodor Seuss Geisel died at the age of 87.  He is better known under his pen name “Dr. Seuss.”

In 1991, Nirvana released their popular album “Nevermind.”

In 2001, President Bush ordered a freeze on the assets of individuals and organizations with suspected ties to terrorism.

In 2003, actor-turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger participated in his first political debate. 

In 2005, Hollywood couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore wed in a secret ceremony at a private residence in Beverly Hills, California.

In 2014, A grand jury opts not to file charges against NASCAR driver Tony Stewart for the death of fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr.  Stewart’s car struck and killed Ward Jr. at a dirt-track race in New York months earlier.

In 2015, Pope Francis visited New York City.  He held a procession through Central Park where some 80-thousand spectators gathered.

In 2019, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.  It claimed he used foreign power for political gain.

In 2020, President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett for the U.S. Supreme Court to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  She was approved by the Senate just one month later, one week ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

And that brings us here to this day.
