Federal Judge To Vote on Absentee Ballots

A federal judge is hinting he will allow someone else to return absentee ballots for disabled voters this year.

Judge James Peterson yesterday proposed an order that would allow a relative or aide to return the ballot for someone who is disabled and cannot vote in-person. Wisconsin’s ban on ballot drop boxes comes with direction from the State Supreme Court that voters can only return their own ballots. The judge said he will rule by next week on the discrepancy between the state’s ban on other people returning ballots, and federal protections for disabled voters.
