A federal court says Wisconsin cannot tax tribal lands without the okay from Congress.
The appeals court in Chicago issued the ruling yesterday. It backs three bands of the Chippewa in northern Wisconsin. The state tried to impose property taxes on the land back in 2018 because the tribes sold the land to non-tribal members, then bought it back. The tribes say the land is tax-free under the terms of a treaty from 1854.
