Speed Believed To Be a Factor in Deadly Crash

On Friday, July 22, 2022 at 6:33 pm, Sawyer County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted by Sawyer County EMS, Stone Lake Fire Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a single vehicle crash on County Highway F near Langham Lane in the Town of Sand Lake.

Upon arrival on scene, deputies learned from eye witnesses that a 1982 Chevrolet Corvette operated by Raymond J. Wilcox, age 62, of Stone Lake, WI was traveling south on County Highway F and attempted to pass several vehicles. While doing so, the Wilcox vehicle hit the gravel on the shoulder of the northbound lane, over corrected and entered the ditch on the southbound lane striking a tree. Despite lifesaving efforts by deputies, Wilcox succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It is believed speed may have been a factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office and the Sawyer County Coroner’s Office.
