A number of complaints has lead to the following reminder from local authorities:
As a follow-up to a social media post we made on June 30th , the Sheriff’s Office has continued to receive a number of reports from individuals advising they received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer on the phone will tell the individual they have a warrant for their arrest and to clear it up they should send money or gift cards.
We want to reiterate that the Sheriff’s Office will never call someone over the phone and ask for payment to clear up a warrant. If you receive a call like this, simply hang up. Another thing to note is an individual will likely already know if they have a warrant for their arrest. Don’t let a scammer talk you into thinking you have a warrant if you know you wouldn’t have one. If there is ever a question if you are wanted or not, you can contact the Sheriff’s Office.
