It’s Hip to Be Kubb

Eau Claire, WI will host the 15th annual Kubb National Championships this weekend, July 8-10, at the Eau Claire Soccer Park. This year’s event boasts 128 teams and over 440 players, coming from at least 19 different states.

“This year, the U.S. Championship will be the second-largest tournament in the world, and we are extremely excited to welcome and host another full capacity of teams, said Eric Anderson, Director of U.S. National Kubb Championship. “Players are coming from coast to coast, and the local growth here in the Eau Claire area has been huge in the past year. We have a great mix of world-class players, beginners, and every type of Kubb player between.”

For anyone unfamiliar with the game of Kubb, it is best described as “Viking Chess” and requires skill, aim, and strategy. You can find a quick review of the game and rules here. The event is free to spectators, with the games being held at Eau Claire Soccer Park on the corner of Hamilton Ave. and Craig Rd.

The games begin on Friday with The U.S. Junior Kubb Championship beginning at 9 am and the Kubb Skills Competition beginning at 5:30 pm. For the U.S. Championship, round-robin group play begins on Saturday at 9 am and continues with playoffs at 1 pm for all teams. The final 16 teams will advance to Sunday, where they will be placed in groups with four other teams from their quarter, and those matches will start at 8 am The semi-finals are anticipated to start around 11:30 am on Sunday.
