In 1972, the controversial XXX-rated film “Deep Throat” opened at the Mature World Theatre in New York City.
In 1979, cowboy screen legend John Wayne died at the age of 72.
In 1987, Margaret Thatcher became the first British Prime Minister in 160 years to win a third consecutive term of office.
In 1993, the Supreme Court ruled that people who commit hate crimes motivated by bigotry may face a harsher punishment.
In 1999, “Star Trek” actor DeForest Kelley died at the age of 79. Kelley is best known for his role as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy on the classic sci-fi series.
In 2001, Timothy McVeigh was executed by lethal injection for the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The blast killed 168 people and injured hundreds of others.
In 2002, the talent search series “American Idol” premiered on Fox.
In 2003, broadcasting legend David Brinkley died at the age of 82.
In 2004, the jury deliberating the sentencing for Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols deadlocked, sparing Nichols a death sentence. The jury quickly convicted Nichols on state murder charges for his role in the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building, but deliberated for three days and was unable to reach a verdict on the penalty.
In 2010, Pope Benedict asked for forgiveness from God and from those who had been abused as children by priests.
In 2019, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to eliminate single-use plastic by 2021.
In 2021, a U.S. lobsterman survives being swallowed by a humpback whale off the Massachusetts coast.
