Audit Turns Up Millions in Accounting Mistakes

Wisconsin lawmakers are promising some changes at the state’s insurance commissioner’s office after an audit found nearly 61 million-dollars in accounting mistakes in the state’s medical malpractice fund.

A new audit released this week says the mistakes misstated the finances for the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund. The fund is designed to pay for people injured or killed during medical malpractice cases. The insurance commissioner’s office says the mistake was a simple transcription error, but auditors say the problems are much more serious. Lawmakers say they will make necessary changes later this fall.
