Study Looks Into Well Pollution, “Mooo”ving Blame

Two of Wisconsin’s largest dairy groups say a new study shows you cannot blame cows for all of the polluted wells in western Wisconsin.

The Venture Dairy Cooperative and the Wisconsin Dairy Alliance yesterday said the latest Southwest Wisconsin Groundwater and Geology report from the University of Wisconsin shows that twice as many wells were contaminated by people than by cows. The report comes as Wisconsin looks to impose new regulations on farmers because of high fecal matter levels in wells in southwestern Wisconsin. The dairy groups say they’re willing to work with the state, but say they don’t want to be blamed for pollution that comes from people’s leaky septic tanks.
