It could take years to clear all of Wisconsin’s pending criminal cases.
The state’s Public Defender’s Office this week said there are 35-thousand cases waiting to go to trial. The backlog is being blamed on the coronavirus-stoppage of criminal trials, and on a lack of public defenders. Many counties in the state say there aren’t enough public defenders, and say they can’t find enough private attorneys to cover the gap.
