One day after Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk announced his retirement, two candidates jumped into the race. Former Elk Mound police chief Travis Hakes is running as a Republican, while Chris Kowalczyk is running as a Democrat. Chris Kowalczyk is the sheriff’s brother and an investigator with the sheriff’s office. The two will face off in November.
