Afghan Refugees Start School, Resettlement Efforts Continue

The last of the Afghan refugees in Wausau are starting school.

The city’s school district yesterday said elementary school students from Afghanistan started school this week. Middle school and high schoolers started last week. Wausau Schools are not saying just how many Afghan students they have in school. The school district’s Chris Nyman says other students have been assigned to the refugee kids as a buddy, to help show them the ropes in an American school.

Here locally, a new non-profit is looking to bring some Afghan refugees to Eau Claire.

Welcoming New Neighbors-Northwest Wisconsin Refugee Resettlement is working with Lutheran Social Services in Milwaukee to bring Afghans from Fort McCoy here. There are some hurdles, namely that the group is new and is hundreds of miles from LSS’ offices in Milwaukee. New Neighbors Bea Evans says they are working on those hurdles. She hopes to get approval, then get a new family for Eau Claire soon.
