Bloomer Teen Named Hometown Hero

The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize Bloomer teen Alena Otto as a “Hometown Hero” during its upcoming floor session on January 25 th .

Otto, who was nominated by her state representative Rob Summerfield (R-Bloomer), helped save a drowning child last winter who had fallen through the ice. “You’re never too young to make a difference,” said Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) who selected him for the award. “Thanks to Alena’s quick-thinking, she recognized the danger of the situation and reacted immediately to save the young boy’s life.”

“You’re never too young to make a difference”

While out ice fishing one cold January day, Alena saw a friend fall through the ice. The boy began to yell for his father, but Alena knew how dangerous frigid temperatures can be. She quickly crawled across the ice and pulled the boy out. After the boy was safe, Alena took off his wet clothes and escorted him to a warm vehicle. Alena was awarded the prestigious bronze cross by the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes for her heroic actions.

“Alena’s example of bravery and selflessness is something we all can strive for,” Rep. Summerfield concluded. “I’m proud to have constituents like Alena who we can honor as heroes.”
