It’s the first day back in in-person classes for kids at Spooner Middle School in a month.
The district yesterday got the all-clear to reopen the building. Kids were sent to learn from home last month because of a mystery odor in the building. Crews cleaned the school and sent the mystery substance out for tests, school leaders yesterday said it appears that students and teachers were exposed to styrene. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, the definition of what that is:
Styrene is a colorless, flammable liquid, which has a sweet odor and is highly volatile. Styrene is widely used to make plastics and rubber, which are used to manufacture a variety of products, such as insulation, pipes, automobile parts, printing cartridges, food containers, and carpet backing.
No one is saying how it happened, and Spooner schools are trying to assure parents that there are no long term health risks
