The mayor of Waukesha Wisconsin, says the typical Norman Rockwell-like Christmas parade held last night turned into a nightmare.
Police have officially named the suspect in the Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy as 39-year-old Darrell Brooks.
Authorities say today that prior to breaking through barriers and mowing down dozens of people Brooks was involved in a domestic dispute. Police say it was not part of a police chase and Brooks was taken into custody not far from the scene. Five separate counts of first-degree intentional homicide have been referred to the DA’s office. The victims were identified today as James Coolidge, Tamara Durand, Wilhelm Hospel, Leanna Owens, and Virginia Sorensen. Forty-eight people are injured including 18 children.
Flags are flying at half-staff across the state in memory of the victims of the Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy.
A vigil is being held for the victims.
The vigil is this evening at 5 p.m. at Cutler Park in Waukesha. It’s being sponsored by the Association of Waukesha Congregations. Free parking is available at 241 South Street.
The City of Waukesha is reaching out to anyone experiencing emotional distress from the traumatic events of last evening. Officials say anyone needing to talk to someone can call and they will be connected to a trained counselor. Counselors are available 24-seven.
