Commanders at Fort McCoy say over 90 percent of the more than nine thousand Afghan refugees who are still at the base have a winter coat.
The base is getting ready for winter. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security yesterday said that means setting-up tents so people can wait for meals inside, preparing to plow the base’s streets, and looking to create a bus route so refugees don’t have to walk as much in the cold. More than three thousand Afghans have been settled out of Fort McCoy, though no one is saying just where they’ve been sent. There is also no timeline as to how long the remaining refugees will stay at the base.
