The Republicans who control Wisconsin’s legislature have made their case to change some of what’s possibly being taught in the state’s public schools.
Lawmakers yesterday approved a series of education reforms that would do everything from require schools to share lesson plans with parents, to teach cursive and civics, and ban teaching racial and gender stereotypes. That’s being called a ban on critical race theory. Nearly all of the plans are doomed. Governor Tony Evers is expected to veto them as soon as they arrive on his desk.
We will show you different sides, so you can decide.
Across the isle, Democrats at the Wisconsin Capitol say Republicans are playing politics and showing racism at the state’s schools.
Democratic State Rep. LaKeshia Myers yesterday said the state’s proposed ban on teaching racial stereotypes is meant to sow ‘seed of division and hate’ to a ‘shrinking white majority’ in Wisconsin. She says Republicans shouldn’t be afraid to talk about gender, race, and all manners of other things with school kids. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says the plan Myers doesn’t like simply states that all people are created equal and would only ban teaching racial preferences or racial inferiority.
