The Department of Defense approves Fort McCoy as a place to house Afghan refugees.
Yesterday, officials at the base east of La Crosse said the Pentagon is green lighting the request from the State Department for the military to help out with Afghan refugees. Fort McCoy spokesperson Tonya Townsell says the DoD has authorized Fort McCoy along with Fort Bliss near El Paso, Texas and Fort Lee south of Richmond to house Afghan Special Immigrant Visa applicants and their families. Townsell did not specify what is the number of Afghans who are to receive the assistance.
