Several thousand Afghan refugees are to be temporarily housed at Wisconsin’s Fort McCoy, but Governor Tony Evers says that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be settled in Wisconsin, as organizations work to assist them once they arrive.
The military confirmed Wednesday that as many as 22-thousand Afghan refugees will be placed at Fort McCoy and two other bases in the U.S. A Pentagon briefing did not include details on when the first refugees would start arriving at Fort McCoy.
While we wait for more information and no one is sure just where thousands of Afghan refugees could end-up in Wisconsin, but one Eau Claire city councilor hopes it’s here. Councilman Andrew Werthmann yesterday said he is glad to see Wisconsin taking some of the people who are being evacuated from Afghanistan. He said Eau Claire would welcome them.
