Both the city council and the county board last night voted to end their mask mandates, effective immediately. We will show you different sides so you can decide, as City-County Health Director Lieske Giese said the coronavirus has not disappeared, and last night warned about another surge in cases.
City and county leaders still voted to end the mask requirement. People, of course, can continue to wear a mask if they’d like to.
That seems to be the trend as we look around the state. More and more cities across southeast Wisconsin are dropping their mask requirements.
Wauwatosa and Racine are the latest. Both cities last night agreed to end their mask mandates and get back to normal. Racine’s mask requirement is officially over, starting today. Wauwatosa’s mask requirement will end June 16th.

Mayor Tom Barrett yesterday said the city’s public health order, which requires both face masks and restrictions on local businesses, will end June 1st. Originally, Milwaukee was going to stay under its coronavirus order until June 15th. The mayor says the coronavirus has not gone away. He says he is lifting the health order because vaccination efforts in Milwaukee have been successful.
The city’s health commissioner says only fully vaccinated people are supposed to go maskless, but she says people will be on the honor system going forward.
