A woman in Madison is the first person in Wisconsin to get a double lung transplant after suffering from COVID-19.
Carmen Lerma has been in the hospital since October and doctors considered the double transplant her only chance for survival. She only had to wait a few days before having surgery and was released from the transplant unit November 5th. Her surgeon says she still has a long way to go, but Lerma says being able to be with her family again is priceless.
She wrote a letter to the family of her donor to thank them for her second chance at life.
