Behind the Mask Mandate

Don’t get rid of your masks just yet. Governor Tony Evers yesterday issued a new order that extends his mask requirement for 60 more days until November 21st.

The governor says Wisconsin’s spike in coronavirus positives shows the need.

On the other side of the aisle, Republican lawmakers are talking about overruling Governor Tony Evers’ latest face mask order. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says the governor doesn’t have the constitutional authority to do that. Other lawmakers want the legislature to come back to Madison and overturn the governor’s order. Governor Evers says Wisconsin’s spike in coronavirus positives means the virus is not under control.

When it comes to businesses, Wisconsin’s largest business group says it has no problem with asking people to wear masks, but it does have a problem with a one size fits all mask order.

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce yesterday said it continues to ask Governor Evers not to push a statewide mask requirement because the needs across the state of Wisconsin are different. The group’s Kurt Bauer yesterday said they support wearing masks in confined spaces, but want the governor to give local communities and local businesses some flexibility to meet their needs.
