As we look at the bigger picture, the latest coronavirus count in Wisconsin shows that college students are driving the spike in positive tests.
The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported over 15 hundred new positive tests. DHS also reported that one-quarter of all positive tests in the state are in people between 18 and 24. In fact, DHS’s numbers show that all other age groups are seeing fewer people test positive. The jump in positives among college students is not being reflected in a jump in hospitalizations. DHS says just over 300 people are in the hospital with the virus, 93 are in the ICU. Those numbers have been steady for weeks.
Here locally, UW-Eau Claire is changing its coronavirus testing. The school yesterday started testing for antigens which can tell if a student is positive for the virus even without symptoms. The university says 102 students have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the month. None of those students have been hospitalized. It hasn’t been long enough to declare any of them recovered yet.
