UW Campuses See Coronavirus Case Jumps

The coronavirus quarantine dorm at UW-Eau Claire is filling-up, but not everyone who’s being quarantined has tested positive.

The university yesterday said 69 students have tested positive for the virus since arriving on campus last week. Positive students are being sent to Putnam Hall for a two-week quarantine. But UW-Eau Claire says over 150 students have been quarantined in all. Many of them were exposed to people who tested positive. Those students quarantined in their dorms.

The return of students to UW-Madison is driving the jump in coronavirus numbers in Madison and Dane County.

The county said it saw 147 new positive tests on Saturday, the most for any Saturday since testing began. Public health managers say at least half of those cases can be tied back to the university. But while the positive test numbers are up, hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus in Wisconsin are holding steady.

The state doesn’t break-down hospitalizations by county, but DHS reported on Sunday that 286 people across the state were in the hospital with the virus.
