Western Wisconsin’s second human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis has become deadly.
Public health managers in Chippewa Falls say a Chippewa County woman in her 60s passed away from the virus. She is the second person this year to be confirmed with EEE as a young woman from Eau Claire County was the first. EEE is spread to humans from horses by mosquitoes, and it is a rare disease. This year’s cases are the first since 2017, and only the third and fourth cases in the state since 2010.
