Teachers’ unions in Wisconsin want to have more of a say in how schools will reopen this fall. A group of teachers in the Green Bay-area met last night to talk about how to safely reopen schools. The push from the union is to protect teachers from catching the coronavirus. Most of the conversation was against returning to in-person classes.
Here locally, decisions are being made in our districts and there’s a plea from school leaders in Dunn County to keep sick kids home from school this fall. County health officials met online yesterday with administrators at Menomonie schools, UW Stout, and others. There is not yet a back-to-school plan for every school, so the general thought is to focus on school safety. Menomonie Schools’ Joe Zydowsky said parents need to help monitor their kids’ health this fall, so that other students and teachers don’t get sick.

Kids in Durand schools will be in class, as usual this fall. The school district last night agreed to in-person classes, five days a week. Some parents and a number of teachers don’t want kids in classrooms that often and for that long. School Board President Bill Yingst says 70 percent of parents said in a survey that they want their kids in class, and the school board will honor that.
