On Thanksgiving Day the Black River Falls Fire Department will begin its annual “Keep The Wreath Green” holiday fire prevention campaign that will end on New Year’s Day. The wreath which will be hanging on the side of the fire station has all green lights. Any time there is a structure fire in the county during the fire prevention campaign a green light will be replaced with a red light to indicate a structure has occurred some where within the county. The goal of the six week campaign is to have no red lights in the wreath at the end.
A white light will be placed in the wreath should there be a line of duty death (LODD) of a Firefighter any where within the state.
The Department not only wants to “Keep The Wreath Green”, but also help make folks aware of extra safety that needs to be taken during the holiday season.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that between, 2013-2017 an estimated 160 home structure fires began with Christmas trees. These fires caused an annual average of three deaths, 15 civilian injuries, and $10 million in direct property damage.
