UTILITY SCAM MAKING ROUNDS

UTILITY SCAM MAKING ROUNDS

Recently the Sawyer County Sheriff Department has received numerous complaints from citizens reporting that they have received calls from individuals claiming to be from local utility companies.

The scammers attempt to get the victims to give them payment or financial information and threaten to turn off their utilities if they do not comply.

If you receive such a call, do not give personal information. Hang up and contact your utility company directly using the contact information listed on your utility bill, or their direct company website. If anyone has been scammed in this manner, it is recommended you contact your local law enforcement agency.

ON THAT NOTE: A new law preventing Wisconsin utility companies from turning off customers’ heat starts today.

Friday marks the beginning of this year’s heating moratorium, which means utility companies can’t shut off people’s heat or gas even if they miss payments.

The moratorium lasts until April 15th, 2020.
