TOWN OF WHEATON HEATS UP INDEPENDENT FIRE PROTECTION

The town of Wheaton is looking to go on its own for fire protection.

Town leaders last night voted to leave the Chippewa Fire District at the end of next year.  Wheaton will start its own fire department, though leaders are talking with Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire about EMS and ambulance service.  Wheaton board president Mark Blaskowski said the town spends about 200-thousand-dollars a year to be a part of the Chippewa Fire District, but he says that money will now have to be spent on firefighters and firefighting gear.
