The UW Hospital is launching the first study in the country involving cell therapy for kidney transplant issues.
People who have kidney transplants can experience a potentially serious infection called cytomegalovirus or CMV. As part of the study, doctors will infuse donor immune cells into people who develop the infection. The CDC says more than ten-percent of American adults have chronic kidney disease. Roughly 100-thousand people remain on the kidney transplant waiting list, but only about 16-thousand transplants happen every year.
