One Wisconsin lawmaker wants to end lunch shaming in the state’s public schools, but local school leaders aren’t so sure.
State Rep. Gary Tauchen is pushing a plan to stop schools from not feeding, or feeding a smaller lunch to children who cannot pay. But his plan doesn’t include any money from the state, so schools would have to eat the cost of the lunches that they give away. Local school leaders say they’d rather see each school set its own lunch policy rather than have lawmakers impose something from Madison.
