WI POLITICAL NOTES: EVERS CONNECTS TAX INCREASE DOTS, ALARMS OVER CABINET PICK

Governor Evers is saying that extra University of Wisconsin funding and major Milwaukee-area interstate improvements are unlikely without a tax increase.

Evers made the announcement yesterday while speaking at an event at UW-Milwaukee.  His budget proposal includes a tuition freeze at UW campuses along with 150-million dollars in new funding for the system.  The proposal also seeks 65-million dollars in bonding authority to make interstate improvements in Milwaukee.  To pay for these and other spending choices in the proposal, Evers is asking for one-billion dollars in tax increases.

Not so fast…

Top Senate Republicans are raising alarms over Governor Tony Evers’ pick for Secretary of the Department of Safety and Professional Services.  Dawn Crim was charged in 2005 with felony child abuse for jabbing her five-year-old son’s hand with a pen, causing it to bleed.  The former assistant coach for UW women’s basketball faced a deferred prosecution and the record was removed from the state’s online circuit court record system.  Republican leaders are questioning her fitness for the role of secretary.
