Some groundbreaking research in Madison is helping babies with heart defects.
Researchers in a lab at the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research are creating three dimensional models of fetal hearts made from ultrasound images. The models allow doctors to see what a heart with defects will look like and how it will function before babies are born. The Madison lab is the only place in the world where researchers have successfully pumped fluid through a 3D fetal heart, simulating blood flow.
