Madison Mayor Calls For Reopening Of Corey Ruiz Memorial Intersection

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is calling for barricades at the Williamson Street and Baldwin Street intersection to be removed while preserving memorials for Corey Ruiz.

Rhodes-Conway says the occupation is unsafe, is harming the surrounding neighborhood, and cannot influence the state’s investigation. The mayor is urging those at the site to remove barricades, tents, and obstructing vehicles while keeping the memorial in place. The city says it will work with Ruiz’s family and the community to protect memorial items and develop a long-term plan. Rhodes-Conway says the Wisconsin Department of Justice continues its independent investigation into Ruiz’s death at the hands of a Madison Police officer.

Madison Police are cooperating but have no authority over charging decisions.
